Making Jello Worms
Jello Worms
Ingredients
1 cup of boiling water
1 cup of cold water
2 packets of jello mix (whatever flavor and colors, we did cherry and strawberry)
A box of straws
Directions
Boil 1 cup of water, then pour in the two packets of powder, stir till it dissolves. After the powder is dissolved add the cup of cold water.
Put your straws into a tall cup (I found having the bendy part of the straw facing upward made getting the jello out easier), put as many as can fit. Finally pour the liquid as much as possible into the straws and refrigerate for 4 hours (we did ours in the morning so we could eat our worms at snack time).
After the 4 hours take the worms out. If they don't seem to want to come out after you tried squeezing them, run the straw under warm water for a few seconds that should do the trick. Last thing, enjoy your squishy, slimy, worm snack!
ps. Working with the red jello really stains your hands (by the end of the day the color did wear off though) so you may want to use a less bright color or use gloves when working with the straws or rock very pink hands for a day.
As a homeschooling mom I try to turn everything we do into learning moments. After first seeing these Jello worms on Pinterest, I knew I wanted to try it. What were we going to learn from it? In science we have been working on matter. So what is better then Jello? We started with solid (powder) by adding it into liquid it turned liquid, then we chilled it and we go back to solid. By having Dash read the directions we not only covered science, he practiced also his reading skills, and his math skills by measuring and figuring out what time the worms would be ready. He also used his writing skills to work on a prediction paper, seeing this was our first time doing this even I couldn't predict the out come :). Th paper included how he thought the worms would turn out, and then after we made them, how his predictions were the same or different from the out come.
